fellermj@att.net posted on: Sat Nov 1 20:17:12 PDT 2008 UNIT ASSIGNED: 3/23rd Infantry Enjoy the site very much!! I was in Korea from Feb., 1968 to April, 1969. I was a forward observer in the 4.2 mortor platoon, HHC, 3/23rd. During this time the battalion rotated from "North" to "South" about every 3 or 4 months. I believe our camp north of the Imjin was Camp Lawton, just on the north side of "Freedom Bridge". When we were "North", since I was a FO, I would spend four days on a GP in the Zone, and then four days back in compound in Fire Direction Control. This was my summer of 1968 and late winter and early spring of 69. This is when I received my Scout patch. This site has brought back many memories, some good, some not so good. I still have the 3/23rd battalion yearbooks for 68 and 69. I could scan portions if anyone is interested. Thanks again for the site!! John (JC) Fellerman |

vendador@cox.net posted on: Tue Sep 2 04:43:27 PDT 2008 UNIT ASSIGNED: DID NOT SERVE I was had a classified mission with the 8195 Army Unit, 8th Army. My first classified mission was on Hill 1174 along the DMZ, west of Panmunjam. My second classified mission was along the Imjin River along the DMZ. I was intercepting and recording Morse code transmissions by the North Koreans, and Chinese, and the Russians. These enemies were using slight variations of International Morse Code, so I was able to recognize and record them. We used triangulation to locate the site of transmission. Because of the classified nature of our mission we always had ROK forces nearby. On Hill 1174 we were next to a ROK marine observation post that was dug into the hill overlooking North Korea. The ROK Marines would frequently capture civilians, probably escaping from North Korea. The ROKs would interrogate these victims with such brutality that the captured often died. The ROK officer explained that the victims were Communists. Out in front we were intimidated by Russian Tanks driven by North Koreans and were subjected to sniper fire. This was a very dangerous situation and we were in constant danger. Along the Imjin we often saw the ROK forces force women and children and babies back from the garbage pit while we dumped our garbage. These starving women and children were trying to get something to eat, they lived in holes in the ground by the garbage dump. The ROKs fired over the heads of the women and children and often there would be women and children killed because of the indiscriminate firing. This also was a very dangerous place and on May Day we were given a 50 cal. machine gun to protect our selves and our classified equipment from May Day demonstrations. I was able to intercept and record enemy transmissions. |

pesteward@hotmail.com posted on: Sat May 17 18:34:56 PDT 2008 UNIT ASSIGNED: 2/2nd Engineers Sorry to be so long in posting this. I thought I already had. Today (6 April 2008) is a day of mixed feelings for me. I received this message this morning - FROM: Monica Ivey, Daughter of 1SGT Carl Ivey - Received at 10:00 (Eastern Time) this morning - Carl Ivey's transition "I'm writing to inform you of the passing of my father, Carl Ivey, this morning. He had a real struggle the past two weeks but was a mighty soldier until the end. I want to thank you for all your kind words and prayers the past few months. You were a real encouragement." * * * I realize that many of you never knew 'TOP' Ivey, but for those of us who served with him, we feel sorrow for his passing. However, we can also feel a sense of joy and celebration that 'Top' has now moved to a place where there is no more sorrow, pain or war. Top has been fighting Cancer and other complications for many months and underwent numerous surgeries at Walter Reed Army Hospital. When I last spoke with him he told me he had retired as an E-8 after 24 years in the Army. He had served at least two tours in Vietnam, and two + tours in Korea, one of which I had the great honor of having him beside me. I have no reservations saying that had Agent Orange not been invented, Top would still be with us today. Today, I have no doubt that Top is walking along streets of gold and linking arms with family members and his many soldier friends who went before him. 1SGT Carl Ivey (Hatchet Handle Ivey) was a good man, a fine soldier, a loving and caring father and grandfather, and a strong Christian and Friend, and we will miss him. But I am happy that he now serves in the Army of our Maker. It was my intention to visit Top on my trip to Washington, DC on 15 April. I hope to still visit him while I am there, if I can. I have included Top's daughter's e-mail address, should you care to send his family a message. MONICA IVEY iveyaka@yahoo.com |

pesteward@hotmail.com posted on: Fri Mar 21 20:04:40 PDT 2008 UNIT ASSIGNED: 2/2nd Engineers Hello Guys - The long awaited Binder of Evidence and Proof of 2nd Engineer Battalion's work in Korea is about ready to go the the printers. Office Depot here as agreed to do the copies of the documents at a reduced price. I am working on a few other large retail companies to try to get a break on the actual binders and Index Tabs to make the project complete and useful. It is my plan to send two (2) complete binders to each of you. One to file with your claim to the VA and one for you to duplicate and share with your Service Officers and your U.S. Congressional Representatives (both Senators and Representatives). There will be a sample letter included for you to use a a guide when writing your Legislators in Washington, DC, asking them to introduce and sponsor/co-sponsor/support bills to include all Veterans who served in Korea during the same times as those troops who served in Vietnam. I thought I would be able to get more companies here in the area to help with production and shipping of these binders than I have gotten. I am still going to do it and will ship them out in batches as my personal funds permit. Just so you all know, several of the guys listed here are not 2nd Engineers, but we had contact with them and their Units and Compounds and they are affected by Agent Orange just as much as we are. Several are from Camp McIntyre in Artillery Valley, which was just down and across the road from E Co., 2nd Engineer Bn.. Because of the weapons they had at their Compound, their perimeters were heavily sprayed by 2nd Engineer personnel to maintain secure clear fields of fire. Several guys have indicated they are willing and able to contribute some to the cost of producing this binder. I thought I could do it all on my own, but it is running more than I anticipated. If any of you are able to contribute some, that would be great. HOWEVER, everybody will get the binders, regardless of whether you can contribute or not. If you can and want to contribute anything, you can send it through PayPal to my e-mail address pesteward@hotmail.com or you can mail it to: Phil Steward 799 Beaumont Road Rock Spring, Georgia 30739-2406 Also, if any of you have any photos or documents showing Hostile Fire Pay orders or vouchers, 2nd Engineer personnel, vehicles or equipment working above the Imjin River, along the Fence, in the ZONE on bunkers and roads or anything else that might help prove we were there, send it along ASAP, PLEASE, so I can include it. I got some really great batches of pictures and a certified copy of a Stars and Stripes newspaper with great coverage and photos of the road work A and D Companies were doing. Finally, if you have not already done so, please send me an e-mail with your name, full street address and phone number, so I know where to send the binders. I will be sending them by UPS and they can not deliver to a PO Box, so make sure, please, that it is a street address. If your only choice is to send to a P.O. Box, tell me and I will send yours by US Mail. Hang in there guys - they will be there shortly. Phil Steward |
