redunc0214@comcast.net posted on: Mon Jan 23 19:49:02 PST 2012 UNIT ASSIGNED: 2/38th Infantry My name is Robirt E Duncan. I worked in the orderly room at HHC 2nd/38th Bue Lancer Valley. I worked as Training NCO for headquarters/headquaters Company. I arrived,as a Spc 5, 18th of Mar,1968. JJ Sanger was the Co of HHC when I got there. Joe Collucci was Co Clerk, John Brideford was Lt Sanger's Driver. Robert Smallwood and Charles Hor worked as the armorers. James Holmes was the 1st Sgt driver. Robert Hurst was in the supply room. I remember being really scared for the first time in my young, at that time, life. I had never been away from home and, somtimes, it was a terrifiying experience. In some ways, it was interesting to see another part of the world at such a young age, I was ninteen, and that was truely an education. As I look back, I'm sure that having had the experience, has made all the difference in my life in many ways. I remember when one of my friends in Recon got killed on a wood cutting detail. It was sad and scary. Lt JJ Sanger went to a line Co and Lt Keck took his place. After a year of rotating back and forth across the Imgin, Falling out in the middle of the night for alerts, pulling guard duty on that mountain outpost, I left one year to the day, in Mar, of 69. I would love to hear from any of the guys I mentioned or, any of those that were there from 68 to 69 in HHC 2nd/38th. |

vctpit@aol.com posted on: Sat Jan 21 13:15:44 PST 2012 UNIT ASSIGNED: 2/72nd Armor, 2ID Every web site I find on the net, I like to read through them. Over the past 15 years doing this, I have not found any mention of my unit that was moved from the 7th ID to the 1ST CAV Division in May or June of 1963. My company, A co, had been part of 2nd Battalion 40th Armor at Camp (Fort ) Beavers just north of Camp Casey. My company was moved lock stock and barrel literally to the 1St CAV north of the IM JIM river near the old rec center. We then became the Aco, 2nd Battalion 15th Armor and our HQs was south in the village of YON GU GOL. I have seen and heard a lot about the infantry units on the DMZ and the CAV units also, but as I said not one word about our company. In July 1963 when the NKs crossed over and ambushed the jeep carrying the relief crew for the OP, killing the 2 in the front and wounding the 3rd in the back, he was Pfc, Foster and young black soldier. My company was broken down by platoons to work with different units north of the river and that is what happened. The crews didn't return to our area until things had cooled down and (normal) operations continued. I left there in January 1964, but I returned to Korea for 2 more tours. In July 1973 I was assigned to C Troop 4/7th Cav at the old Camp Rice which was renamed by our CSM and Sqdn, Co. to be Camp Garry Owen. I returned in July 1976 but assigned to C co. 1/72nd Armor in Dragon Valley at Camp Casey, and 2 or 3 weeks later is when the tree incident took place and my company was given the order to move north of the river and to continue on order to KAE SONG if it was decided we were going to war. That was later known as "Operation Paul Bunyon", we were ready to fight for we believed that the north had done wrong too many times and got away with it, and the only thing that we were concerned about was, whos' side if any that China would be on. I retired form the army 1 Jan. 1987, my first assignment found me on the DMZ of Korea and my final assignment found me on the East German border with the 11th ACR as 1SG of the tank company in our squadron. Thanks for taking the time for reading my post, if anyone did. I'm just an old soldier that enjoys talking about the past and the good ole days. 1SG Vic Pitts, Kings Mountain, N.C. |

Frank Romano Jr. took command of the 1/23rd Infantry 2ID, during 1969 (I Think) at Blue Lancer Valley Korea. After that felled attempt, the North Koreans were killed or wounded by South Korean troops and soldiers from the 2ID. I was there when they sprayed some (32,000) gallons of Agent Orange in the DMZ. I was exposed to Agent Orange there in Korea, and now I have type II diabetes, I do have a combined rating of 100 percent disability from VA. We did receive hostile fire pay for a reason, we did serve well, then we went home and resumed our lives. But a part of us will always be back there looking for a way home. I hope that this message will touch someone from my past and I can for a moment or two, and be 21 again. On February 11, 1978 my squad was sent out on a night and ambush patrol against North Korean Ranger Commando's as there were enemy patrols in the area. My squad leader, Sgt Joe Phillips had a problem reading the map, almost got us inside a mine field, and to top that off forgot the entrance codes to get us back to GP (Guard Post) 115, we were under arms fire, the Sgt had the squad low crawl to the other side of GP 115 where the gate was, hoping that we could make it without getting shot, hit by fragments of a Claymore or have a grenade dropped on us. We knew if we were spotted we had seconds to live. We finally got radio contact with the Command Center at 115 were told we were in eminent danger as PFC David Apperson was on the outer post just seconds from clicking the Clamores, throwing grenades and emptying his ammo belt on my squad. We were told that we had a lot of luck of not being killed that day. I had several other dangerous incidents within the DMZ In fact, I have had nightmares all these years remembering Feb 11, 1978 when I almost lost my life. There are any Manchu soldier who wants to share photos with me of the DMZ. I was in Camp Howze from Jan-may 1978 and Camp Greaves May-Dic 1978. my my address is RR 9 BOX 1544 SAN JUAN PR 00926-9305 |

jlgru@mindspring.com posted on: Thu Aug 18 14:05:51 PDT 2011 UNIT ASSIGNED: 2/9th Infantry I read you comments on Imjun Scout with great Interest. I finally found comrades who was in the Blue Lancer Valley at the same time I was! I didn’t spend much time there, maybe 2-3 times in my tour, since that was Regimental HQ. I was a Platoon Ldr and later XO of C Company 2/9th Inf (M) Camp Corsen (SP). Most of my time was spent north of the Imjin River at what were tents and later prefabs outside JSA (Joint Security Area). I have over 200 missions in the “Zone.” I led the patrol on search and destroy missions against the 31 Agents who infiltrated south. My driver was a few yards to my right in very dense growth descending down a hill with on of the agents attempted to toss a grenade. As close as I was I couldn’t see due to growth. My driver and two others of my patrol fired on him. I made sure he was dead but was lying on a grenade. I had a long rope attached and we dragged him to make sure the pin hadn’t been pulled. 2ID C.O. General Izenour flew out, shook my hand and looked at the cache of stuff we found on him. A National Geographic’s team who was in country also came out to write about the DMZ I refused an interview. I also led other patrols which found the largest cache ever found in country up to that time. Again, the General few out shook my hand. I had some other assignments such as Libby Bridge Commander. I get to blow the bridge if ordered which was pre- wired with explosives. No one cared how I was going to get back across the Imjin! I also taught every combat BN in the Div “Quick Kill,” which was a method of firing without aiming, much like bird hunting. I mention these things to see if any you possibly remember me or those incidents I cited? I was a short haired guy with a black mustache! Another assignment was leading a patrol boat up and down the river. That was pretty good duty! I too was in a foxhole when the Pueblo was seized. It minus something degrees and nasty. Nothing like knowing you may be over-run by 1 million North Koreans and there is one Division back in the States as our backup! Anyway, I had a very complete career in the reserves with my last 5 years being an IMA officer Assigned to the Army General Staff DCSOPS as the Deputy Chief of the Army AOC (War Room). I was awarded a CIB for Korea but I know was shocked to learn last Friday night while exploring various sites that 32,000 gallons of Agent Orange were used in the DMZ. I am filing a VA Claim since I already have Multiple Sclerosis and constant night sweats for which I am treated by a civilian Doctor. I took the orange horse pill every Monday and one day in the Zone I got very sick with chills, sweats and high temperature. I was rushed to the 2nd Med. Where I was asked if I had been taking my pill? I answered in the affirmative. The Doctor showed me my blood sample under the microscope and said that there had been some changes to my blood chemistry. I too am an Imjin Scout! I mention all this as I seek to put in claims with the VA. I don’t even have a VA Card yet. Could take up to year the VA Rep told me. But he is trying to do an end run to bet it faster for me. Also, I want to write my Congressman to get any decorations I didn’t receive. I have the Expeditionary Ribbon for Korea and that is it. I wore the Indianhead my whole career on my right sleeve. I don’t expect you to remember me but my records reflect my units and time rames. I am looking for someone to verify that those events took place, especially the killing of the North Korean by some unit of 2/9th, which was me. If I were to get some verification which the 2ID conveniently leaves out of its web site history, I could be awarded a bronze star to go with my CIB for that incident and the other collective incidents. Let me know if there is anything I can do for you my brothers Your Brother, Jim Gruenebaum, LTC Retired |

I am interested in documenting them. As a rule, the people in charge did not report the incidents because of political reasons due to the Vietnam War. For example, a month or so before I got to Korea, PFC Murray and PFC Bliss and a KATUSA killed a North Korean colonel. However, despite the body and the weapon, even this incident is difficult to find in the records. I am especially interested in a firefight that occurred sometime around late June 1969. Maybe one of these days I'll get them out and do that! Also I never recieved the Imjin Scout award for my participation in Daylight Recon's and Night Ambush's that we set up. My squad did almost kill about 30 Korean's during a daylight recon. We weren't briefed that South Koreans from one of the (2) outpost's they manned would be running PT on the road that morning. The Plt Sgt made a quick radio call to find out the status of these Korean's and were advised not to engage that they were friendly. Could have started an international incident with just one pull of the trigger. Those South Korean soldiers don't know how close they came to being annilated!! Scout's Out!! |

I remember shortly after arriving we did QRF out of the camp at RC#3. There is so much that I do not remember. I did take a lot of pictures which I will be glad to send copies to anyone who is interested. While up north in February of 1968 we worked out of GP Jane running patrols. I remember that on a cloudy night you could not see your hand 6 inches in front of your face. Looking back I had a lot of friends that I have not seen or heard from since 1968. I did visit with our platoon SGT Clerf Adkins twice after coming home - once in 1969 at his home in Ridgeway, SC and again in 1993 I believe - I have since lost contact with him. |
