I am currentlythe Commander of the United Nations Command Security Battalion-JSA. We are the only unit left with both ROK and US Soldiers serving in the DMZ. Since 2004, the tactical missions of securing Pan Mun Jom, Freedom Village, and conducting counter-infiltraiton and surveillance patrols are carried out by ROK companies under the operaitonal control of a US Battalion commander and ROK-US staff. However, we still integrate US Infantryman into the dismounted patrols in the DMZ and carry out various surveillance and security operations to maintain the neutrality of the JSA. In the wake of the recent Choenan tragedy, we once again see how tensions can heat up quickly on the peninsula. I plan to conintue the Imjin Scout tradition for the current generation of soldiers, both ROK and US, who patrol inside the DMZ using the guidelines you have preserved here. Thanks for your dedicaiton and service. Today's generation have inherited a distinguished heritage. |

I earned the Imjin scout patch with less then 2 months in country. When I left I was awarded a Imjinscout certicate listing a total of 9 months duty on the Imjin. "Hostile Fire Pay" was given for this duty yet When you left Korea you were no longer authorized to wear the Imjinscout patch on your uniform. Though many of us did. The explaination for this was because if you had enough time on the zone you got to wear the 2nd ID patch on your right shoulder. |

I served as a mechanized rifle platoon leader with A Co, 1-31st Infantry, 1971-72. Our battalion nickname was "The Bearcat Battalion." At the time. we were the only American battalion stationed "north of the river" of course, there were the American soldiers of the Joint Security Area (JSA) too. Most of the battalion was based at Camp Greaves, although B Co and elements of HQ Company (those HQ Co elements were later assigned to the then newly formed Combat Support Company) were base at Camp Liberty Bell. The 1-31st manned GP Collier, GP Ouellette, Freedom Bridge, and a portion of DMZ fence. Sometime in 1972, 1-17th Infantry assumed responsibility for Freedom Bridge. We had a 6-week rotation: each letter company alternately had 2 weeks of DMZ duty, 2 weeks of training, and 2 weeks on Freedom Bridge. Of course, we also conducted patrols in the DMZ. I'm proud of my Imjin Scout award and wish the best to all Korea Defense Veterans. Pro Patria! |

I hope you haven’t abandoned this website Don, and/or you are ok, this is a great website. I wrote in the guestbook back in August 3, 2009 and October 31, 2009 about trying to get medals that were stolen from a burglary. August of 2009 I sent a request for my DD214 and how to get replacement medals. April 2010 I finally received replacement medals (NDSM, AFEM and marksman medal) and the KDSM. I received earlier a copy of my DD215, which is a corrected or updated DD214. I managed to buy on EBay two Imjin Scout Badges. Now all I need to do is get Imjin Scout patch and the unit crest for the 2/9th and for the 1/31stwhich is easier to get so I can finally make a shadow box. I found on the www.31stinfantry.org website the history of the 31st,, a really interesting read. I was in the 2/9th when it changed over to the 1/31st on June 17, 1971. Now if anyone can tell me the dates of what camps Bravo Company stayed at from November 1970 to February 1972 I would greatly appreciate it. I just wish I would have kept a journal but nnnnoooooo!!!!
