My name is Val Paul Kilgore. I was assigned to A Co. 1/38 and a Jan 66 class of ACTA. The second class. Very hard school, but very much needed at the time. Sgt e-5 then, Retired in 1978 as a Msg e-8. I would love to hear from any one from that time frame. This web site has given me lots of memories of the good and bad times. Most of all the fine people. Thanks for all the work on this .

I served in both Hq Trp and B Trp of the 1st of the 9th (1st Cav Div) from July of 1961 until October of 1962 (3 month Berlin extension). It is now 2008 and I am 64 years old. I was 17 when I got to Korea and remember my months there with both fondness and trepidation. My God! How can almost 50 years have gone by? My best to all of you who served your country on the DMZ in the Frozen Chousen.

Enjoy the site very much!! I was in Korea from Feb., 1968 to April, 1969. I was a forward observer in the 4.2 mortor platoon, HHC, 3/23rd. During this time the battalion rotated from "North" to "South" about every 3 or 4 months. I believe our camp north of the Imjin was Camp Lawton, just on the north side of "Freedom Bridge". When we were "North", since I was a FO, I would spend four days on a GP in the Zone, and then four days back in compound in Fire Direction Control. This was my summer of 1968 and late winter and early spring of 69. This is when I received my Scout patch.

This site has brought back many memories, some good, some not so good.

I still have the 3/23rd battalion yearbooks for 68 and 69. I could scan portions if anyone is interested.

Thanks again for the site!!

I was had a classified mission with the 8195 Army Unit, 8th Army. My first classified mission was on Hill 1174 along the DMZ, west of Panmunjam. My second classified mission was along the Imjin River along the DMZ. I was intercepting and recording Morse code transmissions by the North Koreans, and Chinese, and the Russians. These enemies were using slight variations of International Morse Code, so I was able to recognize and record them. We used triangulation to locate the site of transmission. Because of the classified nature of our mission we always had ROK forces nearby. On Hill 1174 we were next to a ROK marine observation post that was dug into the hill overlooking North Korea. The ROK Marines would frequently capture civilians, probably escaping from North Korea. The ROKs would interrogate these victims with such brutality that the captured often died. The ROK officer explained that the victims were Communists. Out in front we were intimidated by Russian Tanks driven by North Koreans and were subjected to sniper fire. This was a very dangerous situation and we were in constant danger. Along the Imjin we often saw the ROK forces force women and children and babies back from the garbage pit while we dumped our garbage. These starving women and children were trying to get something to eat, they lived in holes in the ground by the garbage dump. The ROKs fired over the heads of the women and children and often there would be women and children killed because of the indiscriminate firing. This also was a very dangerous place and on May Day we were given a 50 cal. machine gun to protect our selves and our classified equipment from May Day demonstrations. I was able to intercept and record enemy transmissions.

Bob Haynes was just appointed the new Sec/Treas of the Indianhead. Bob will do a great job for us. We talked at the reunion about DMZ Vets getting active with the association and the reunion. If you aren't a member of either association think about joining. Our WW II and Korean Vets are leaving us. Get active and join us. This reunion there were 4 or 5 DMZ Vets. We need more of us. We also need the younger Vets. Contact Bob or myself about membership.

Hello Fellow Warriors,
My name is Bob Haynes and some of you may recognize my name as I have been helping some guys with VA claims for AO exposure.
I have just been appointed National Secretary/Treasurer for the 2nd. Indianhead Association. This is a 501c(3) and (4) group of 2nd. Infantry Division veterans. Most are from WWII and the Korean War era. There are a few of us from the Cold War era and some active duty troops in the Association BUT we need more of our era to join to keep the life blood of the Association pumping! Ther are approx. 1,000 WWII and Korean War veterans dying every day. We need to step up and start taking care of the association before it dies away. Please contact me if you are interested and I can provide more information.
Very best regards!

I am hoping someone can help me return an personal artifact ( a lighter) to it's owner. For some strange reason I was compelled to buy this lighter a few years ago at a flea market table in Michigan. I felt a sense of needing to protect and preserve it as it seemed very special. It has a map on the backside of it with the Libby and Freedom bridge, as well as Imjim and RC 3. The front has a crest shaped insignia with a white cross, a horse head like figure with a cross like pole in his hand and lightblue circle somewhat earth shaped..And the following lettering A CO 3d BN 23 INF. I hope someone can help me figure out who it might have belonged to or perhaps your group would like it as memorabilia?..Thank you...Eva Weeden North Branch Michigan..email is lyiness@yahoo.com...

Sorry to be so long in posting this. I thought I already had.

Today (6 April 2008) is a day of mixed feelings for me. I received this message this morning -

FROM: Monica Ivey, Daughter of 1SGT Carl Ivey - Received at 10:00 (Eastern Time) this morning -

Carl Ivey's transition

"I'm writing to inform you of the passing of my father, Carl Ivey, this morning. He had a real struggle the past two weeks but was a mighty soldier until the end. I want to thank you for all your kind words and prayers the past few months. You were a real encouragement."
* * *
I realize that many of you never knew 'TOP' Ivey, but for those of us who served with him, we feel sorrow for his passing. However, we can also feel a sense of joy and celebration that 'Top' has now moved to a place where there is no more sorrow, pain or war.

Top has been fighting Cancer and other complications for many months and underwent numerous surgeries at Walter Reed Army Hospital. When I last spoke with him he told me he had retired as an E-8 after 24 years in the Army. He had served at least two tours in Vietnam, and two + tours in Korea, one of which I had the great honor of having him beside me. I have no reservations saying that had Agent Orange not been invented, Top would still be with us today.

Today, I have no doubt that Top is walking along streets of gold and linking arms with family members and his many soldier friends who went before him.

1SGT Carl Ivey (Hatchet Handle Ivey) was a good man, a fine soldier, a loving and caring father and grandfather, and a strong Christian and Friend, and we will miss him. But I am happy that he now serves in the Army of our Maker.

It was my intention to visit Top on my trip to Washington, DC on 15 April. I hope to still visit him while I am there, if I can.

I have included Top's daughter's e-mail address, should you care to send his family a message.

Hi,
I'm looking for any information or if anyone knows of a soldier from A?2/31stInf 7th Division .Who in April 1968 stepped on a mine in the DMZ while on a patrol during early morning or late night.Possibly from 5April to 21April 1968. There were two big incidents ,but this would have been from Aco not Bco 2/31st.
I was a member of A co and I found a page on line that stated the SM was looking to get his PH and was turned down by the Military Board of Corrections Review.
I have info for him to help get his PH.

Hello Guys -

The long awaited Binder of Evidence and Proof of 2nd Engineer Battalion's work in Korea is about ready to go the the printers.

Office Depot here as agreed to do the copies of the documents at a reduced price. I am working on a few other large retail companies to try to get a break on the actual binders and Index Tabs to make the project complete and useful.

It is my plan to send two (2) complete binders to each of you. One to file with your claim to the VA and one for you to duplicate and share with your Service Officers and your U.S. Congressional Representatives (both Senators and Representatives). There will be a sample letter included for you to use a a guide when writing your Legislators in Washington, DC, asking them to introduce and sponsor/co-sponsor/support bills to include all Veterans who served in Korea during the same times as those troops who served in Vietnam.

I thought I would be able to get more companies here in the area to help with production and shipping of these binders than I have gotten. I am still going to do it and will ship them out in batches as my personal funds permit.

Just so you all know, several of the guys listed here are not 2nd Engineers, but we had contact with them and their Units and Compounds and they are affected by Agent Orange just as much as we are. Several are from Camp McIntyre in Artillery Valley, which was just down and across the road from E Co., 2nd Engineer Bn.. Because of the weapons they had at their Compound, their perimeters were heavily sprayed by 2nd Engineer personnel to maintain secure clear fields of fire.

Several guys have indicated they are willing and able to contribute some to the cost of producing this binder. I thought I could do it all on my own, but it is running more than I anticipated. If any of you are able to contribute some, that would be great. HOWEVER, everybody will get the binders, regardless of whether you can contribute or not.

If you can and want to contribute anything, you can send it through PayPal to my e-mail address pesteward@hotmail.com or you can mail it to:

Phil Steward
799 Beaumont Road
Rock Spring, Georgia 30739-2406

Also, if any of you have any photos or documents showing Hostile Fire Pay orders or vouchers, 2nd Engineer personnel, vehicles or equipment working above the Imjin River, along the Fence, in the ZONE on bunkers and roads or anything else that might help prove we were there, send it along ASAP, PLEASE, so I can include it. I got some really great batches of pictures and a certified copy of a Stars and Stripes newspaper with great coverage and photos of the road work A and D Companies were doing.

Finally, if you have not already done so, please send me an e-mail with your name, full street address and phone number, so I know where to send the binders. I will be sending them by UPS and they can not deliver to a PO Box, so make sure, please, that it is a street address. If your only choice is to send to a P.O. Box, tell me and I will send yours by US Mail.

Hang in there guys - they will be there shortly.

Phil Steward

I served in Charlie Co, 1/503rd INF (AASLT) while it was assigned to the 2nd brigade of the 2ID. I was with them on our historic deployment from South Korea to the Al Anbar Province of Iraq. We deployed with other highly decorated units in our brigade such as the 1-506 INF(AASLT), 1/9 INF, and 2/17th FA. Upon our redeployment stateside, our unit was re designated, and our colors were cased and sent to the 173rd Airborne Brigade in Italy, as the 1/503rd PIR. I was awarded the CIB, and Purple Heart for actions in Ar Ramadi, and I will always wear the 503rd Regimental crest and keep that as my regimental affiliation. I am proud to have served in such a unit with such distinction and honor, and hope to be assigned to them again in the future. C6R Out

I served in the ROK and did DMZ missions in A Co 1/23 Infantry in 1986, in A Co 1/503 Infantry in 1987 and B Co 1/503 Infantry and one or two patrols with the Scout Platoon 1/503 Infantry in 1991. If I recall, the 1/503 did the last complete Battalion sized DMZ mission of US troops in the winter-spring of 1991. We were relieved by 5/20 Infantry in about April 1991 and they did a smaller Company sized mission that year and soon after ROKA took it all over except JSA.
Great to see the site. Would like to know if photos could be submitted?

Served with Bravo Troop, 4/7th Cavalry, at Camp Jeb Stuart, Feb 1969- May 1970. I was SFC E-7, assigned as Platoon Leader 1st Platoon. Troop Commander was CPT Estrada. First Sergeant was Gilmore. Participated in numerous ambush patrols, SCOSI patrols, Rat patrols and many mounted and dismounted Search and Destroy missions inside the DMZ. Found out years later that I was exposed to Agent Orange (that would be double-dipping because I had already been exposed in Vietnam)and that I probably qualified for second award of Combat Infantry Badge. All I can say is--DILLIGAF?. God Bless Our Troops.

I served with 2nd plt JSA 1982-1983, we had many incidents during that year. We ran combat patrols just south of the JSA, and I was a part of 3 different firefights with the KPA just south, of the bridge of no return,we never found bodies, just lots of blood, also we were ambushed by the ROK army I believe Jan, or Feb of 1983. One of our Katusa's LIM C.H. was killed that night, also I was one of the last americans to ever see Joseph White, before being stuffed into an KPA bunker, just north of Oulette, I was working UNCJSA Tower when I saw him, just in front of KPA 1. I have applied for my Korea Defense Service Ribbon, to include an application for a CIB. I dont think any of this is recorded, I can't find any records of anything I expierienced over there, why is this, why does the U.S try to hide everything tregarding DMZ incidents, we all need to awarded, and not just forgotten for what we went through. Can anyone hepl me, I know the Army Review Board will not believe me, or possibly give me a hard time, about my applications, it makes me very mad, please someone back me up, or help me. Spent 19 months at Camp Pelham with HHB 7/17th Artillery. Many jobs
S-2 clerk, HHB Supply Sgt, Redeye Platoon, Survey Platoon. 19 months Hostile Fire pay. Many nights on the zone running infa-red search light missions. Freezing cold, mickey mouse boots. Fire fights with North Koreans trying to come through fence at night. Driving donut dollies around. Received Imjin Scout patch, I believe from acta can't remember or it was given because of so much time in zone. Still have and look at 7/17th artillery year book 1970-1971. Got out of service as a SSG with the 411th MP Co. at Ft. Hood Tx. Many good memories and some not really want to remember.

Served at Camp Liberty Bell (10 months) and Camp Casey (2 months.) Moved From Liberty Bell to Camp Casey after being replaced at Liberty Bell by a COHORT unit from Hawaii, I think. 1989-1990. I remember many things like giving blood one day, and then going on pass and drinking too much with a guy named Fobear, racing to get back across the bridge before it closed, and having to be held up in morning formation a short time later. I know I am probably spelling Fobear incorrectly. I remember a guy that we simply called "Tall Guy." I remember the patrols, the "Mickey Mouse" boots, the guard posts, and freezing my ---off. Does anybody else remember any of this, or was I dreaming. Corporal Robert T. (Bobby) Gray.
