bimfoozik@yahoo.com posted on: Wed Jun 3 01:07:35 EDT 2009 UNIT ASSIGNED: 1/9th Infantry On Christmas morning, 1970, we were patrolling an area in the middle of the DMZ a few miles from Panmunjom.t was a four hour patrol along the edge of the MDL. We spotted a North Korean patrol about 200 feet away. They were gathering firewood. Everyone on both sides hit the ground. After a tense moment or two, I picked up a piece of wood and waved it at them and pointed to the piece of wood and at them. One of them picked up a stick and waved it at me, and then pointed at himself. A level of communication was reached: You guys are collecting firewood, yes we are collecting firewood. One of them recognized me from my time on GP Lucy, when where we would wave at the North Koreans and do things to get their officers upset (acting like an empty box was a new weapon would get several sets of binoculars trained on us quickly). We all got up slowly and there was a lot of waving and smiling. I think a few people in their patrol were from Warsaw Pact nations and we had a few KATUSAs with us. I started decorating a small tree with some propaganda leaflets we had found and some c-ration cans. They went their way and we went ours. It appeared that they were carrying SKS rifles instead of AK's. I remember some of the guys from our unit, although I don't remember who was in our 9 or 10 man patrol that day. The names I remember were: Sergeant Haynes, Sgt. Washington,Gerloff, Jesus Zamora,Kelly and a KATUSA named HWANG. I was on at least 23 DMZ patrols, usually out of Camp Dodge or GP Katy or GP Lucy. I was in Korea from September 1970 to March 1971. I wonder if anyone ever heard of this incident. |

jbbaird69@hotmail.com posted on: Tue Apr 21 14:23:04 EDT 2009 UNIT ASSIGNED: 1/31st Infantry The Defense Department announced today the creation of theKorean Defense Service Medal (KDSM). The KDSM is a service medal to give special recognition for the sacrifices and contributions made by members of the U.S. armed forces who have served or are serving in the Republic of Korea. Public Law 107-314 legislated the creation of a new medal to recognize military service in the Republic of Korea and the surrounding waters. Members of the armed forces authorized the KDSM must have served in support of the defense of the Republic of Korea. The area of eligibility encompasses all land area of the Republic of Korea, and the contiguous water out to 12 nautical miles, and all air spaces above the land and water areas. The KDSM period of eligibility is July 28, 1954, to a future date to be determined by the secretary of defense. Servicemembers must have been assigned, attached, or mobilized to units operating in the area of eligibility and have been physically deployed in the area of eligibility for 30 consecutive or 60 non-consecutive days or meet one of the following criteria: Be engaged in actual combat during an armed engagement, regardless of the time in the area of eligibility. Is wounded or injured in the line of duty and requires medical evacuation from the area of eligibility. While participating as a regularly assigned air crewmember flying sorties into, out of, within, or over the area of eligibility in support of military operations. Each day that one or more sorties are flown in accordance with these criteria shall count as one day toward the 30 or 60-day requirement. Personnel who serve in operations and exercises conducted in the area of eligibility are considered eligible for the award as long as the basic time criteria is met. Due to the extensive time period for KDSM eligibility, the nonconsecutive service period for eligibility remains cumulative throughout the entire period. The KDSM may be awarded posthumously, and only one award of the KDSM is authorized for any individual. Each military department will prescribe appropriate regulations for administrative processing, awarding and wearing of the KDSM and ribbon for their servicemembers, to include application procedures for veterans, retirees, and next-of-kin. More than 40,000 members of the U.S. armed forces have served in the Republic of Korea or the waters adjacent thereto each year since the signing of the cease-fire agreement in July 1953, which established the Demilitarized Zone. For more than 50 years, U.S. Armed Forces efforts to deter and defend the Korean Peninsula have helped maintain democracy and preserve the indomitable spirit of freedom. -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- |

We lived and patrolled on the DMZ from April 1986-Oct. 1986 and we recieved a very nice certificate for the Imjin Scout Award. I have to tell a story before I go. We were at Guard Post Oullete (sp) performing stand-to. I was sitting under the tripod of the 50 caliber (automatic weapons were not allowed in the DMZ) half asleep. My partner at the time was SP4 Johnson. Johnson was scared of everything. A rat started crawling up my leg and in my sleep induced partial coma I tried to shake him off. Johnson started yelling, "Corporal Baird" what's wrong, he freaked out, got up to run and nailed the bunker and knocked him out. After he was revived I laughed so hard I nearly passed out! A woman from another group called out "Hey 2nd ID how are you?" I was surprised and asked her how she knew the division. She said she spent time in Korea as a teacher and one of her jobs was teaching English to KATUSAs. She asked if I ever heard my name over the NK loudspeakers. I told her I never did but it was nice to talk to a civilian who understood what was going on there. She asked if I had learned any Korean and of course I said about the only thing I remembered was Hey Yobosayo and she laughed. We talked about ourtime in Korea for awhile and then we were called to our brunch seatings. I told her about this site. This was on Long Island New York. Dennis Kulak |

I am retired now from the service but loved catching crap for proudly wearing my ImJin Scout badge all those years. I did see the article on the supposed phony Im Jin Scout patches and I have seen the ones posted on here as fakes on the custom jackets bought "down range" that it seemed everyone bought while there. hope that helps. I served during the last year that the 1/31st was active and have a compnay yearbook frommy time ther if someone needs copies let me know. Also I had gotten one of the 1/31st coins that were made in lue of the deactivation, but saddly had it lost in a fire some years ago. Sp.4 Dennis A. Grahn who served in C Company, 2nd Engineer Bn, 2d Infantry Division suffered a fatal heart attack while traveling from his home in Fairfield, California to Oregon for Thanksgiving Dinner. Dennis was very helpful in our effort by sending photos, statements and a copy of his Hostile Fire Pay Orders listing numerous other men. In Korea he worked on the massive job of installing the new chain link barrier fence, cleared old minfields and daily swept entry points and DP's for Infantry Patrols entering theZone. Dennis leaves his wife, Linda and one daughter that I know of. Although he will be missed by friends and family, we know he is now in a better place and no longer suffering the effect of Agent Orange Poisoning. I was with 2nd inf div 69-70 but was not infantry mos. It was my belief all these years infantry mos was required but through the website I found the 2nd div regulation that I now believe makes me eligible for a scout certificate. I was assigned to c co. 702 maint. bn. We were in a camp which also had 4/7 cav. I was a company driver and spent a lot of time in the dmz as driver and or escort to maintenance personnel performing mission on the dmz. I do have copies of hostile fire pay for at least four months that I can find after so long. I know I performed at least 50 missions into the dmz and remember spending time at 1/9,2/9,1/38 and others i can't remember. I do remember my vehicle was a 151 bumper number c-8. If I am eligible for a scout certificate I would like to get one even though I'm no longer a 19 year old soldier I still have pride in serving with the second division. I also have many photos I would like to share. Thanks Dennis Kulak |

He is suffering from the onset of Parkinson's disease, but he is still sharp as a tack and his memory is first rate. I believe our camp north of the Imjin was Camp Lawton, just on the north side of "Freedom Bridge". When we were "North", since I was a FO, I would spend four days on a GP in the Zone, and then four days back in compound in Fire Direction Control. This was my summer of 1968 and late winter and early spring of 69. This is when I received my Scout patch. This site has brought back many memories, some good, some not so good.
